Jorge & Justine: Chapter 14, part 2
Justine decided to give her mother a call, in response to the letter. She dialed the number into her phone reluctantly, hoping the call would go to voicemail.
Unfortunately, Mrs. Wells picked up after the second ring. “Hello? Marlene Wells speaking.” Justine felt a lump in her throat. “Mom? It’s me, Justine. I got your letter.” “Justine…what’s going on with you? Are you going to come home?” Her mom asked, a hint of nervousness in her voice.
“Mom, I have something that’s difficult to tell you. Well, I met a wonderful man, named Jorge. We’re in love, and…” her voice lowered. “We’re engaged to be married.”
“Justine, are you crazy? How long have you known this man? You knew Tom since childhood, you were high school sweethearts and you left him the day of the wedding. Why are you doing this again?” “Mom, Tom cheated on me. I know you and Dad wanted us to get married, but I didn’t love him. And I couldn’t marry a cheater, I just couldn’t. I know you don’t believe me, but it’s true. “
“I’m sorry Justine, but I’m very disappointed in you. Back in Twinbrook you had a future, you had a family. Now everyone knows you’ve thrown that to the side, you’re living in sin with a man you barely know. What else have you gotten yourself into?” Justine bit her lip. “I’m pregnant, Mom. I’m sorry” She blinked away tears from her eyes.
There was a very long pause. Marlene responded at last in a cool voice. “If you want to save yourself, I’m giving you one opportunity. Cancel your engagement. Board the plane, come back to Twinbrook. We’ll put the child up for adoption once you have it, and you can be reunited with your family. If you don’t accept, you’ll never see your family again.”
Sorry it’s been a while since I’ve posted. If you need a refresher, the last post is here.
